Medical Staff

Our cardiac specialists work to diagnose and treat cardiovascular disease with expert care and leading-edge technologies. Our specialists consist of a team of Electrophysiologists, as well as Medical and Interventional Cardiologists. We are dedicated to the patients we serve and aim for excellence in their cardiac care.

 

Dr. Ard

Dr. Scott W. Ard, Cardiologist

Scott W. Ard, MD, is a graduate of the Louisiana State University School of Medicine, in New Orleans, LA, where he earned his Medical Degree. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at the Medical University of South Carolina, College of Medicine, in Charleston, SC. He completed his Cardiology Fellowship at the Ochsner Clinic Foundation, in New Orleans, LA. He is board certified in Cardiovascular Diseases and Internal Medicine. Dr. Ard is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and is a member of the American Society of Echocardiology as well as the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology. His clinical interests include Valvular Heart Disease, Congestive Heart Failure, and Atherosclerotic Cardiovascular Disease. In his free time, Dr. Ard enjoys coaching the West Carteret High School Lacrosse Team.

Dr. Cohen

Dr. Joseph Cohen, Cardiologist

Joseph Cohen, MD, is a graduate of the New York Medical College, in Vahalla, NY, where he earned his Medical Degree. He completed his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the Montefiore Medical Center, in Bronx, NY. He completed his Cardiovascular Disease Fellowship at the New Jersey Medical School, in Newark, NJ. Dr. Cohen is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease, Critical Care Medicine, Internal Medicine, Nuclear Cardiology, Cardiovascular CT and Echocardiography. His clinical area of interest includes Cardiac Imaging.

Dr. Farmer

Dr. Laurance D. Farmer, Cardiologist

Laurance D. Farmer, MD, is a graduate of the Wake Forest University School of Medicine, in Winston-Salem, NC, where he earned his Medical Degree. He completed his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center, in Winston-Salem. He completed his Cardiology Fellowship at the Medical University of South Carolina, College of Medicine, in Charleston, SC. He is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease, Internal Medicine, Nuclear Cardiology, and Echocardiography. Dr. Farmer is a member of the American College of Cardiology. His clinical areas of interest include Ischemic Heart Disease and Vascular Heart Disease.

Dr. Gould

Dr. John Jay Gould, Cardiologist

John J. Gould, MD, is a graduate of the Chicago Medical School, in North Chicago, IL, where he earned his Medical Degree. He completed his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency, as well as his Cardiology Fellowship at the Albany Medical Center Hospital, in Albany, NY. He was the Chief Resident of Internal Medicine at the Albany Medical Center Hospital. Dr. Gould is board certified in Cardiology and Echocardiography. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and a Diplomate of the American Society of Echocardiography. He is a member of the American Society of Nuclear Cardiology and the American Medical Association. His clinical areas of interest include General Cardiology-Management of Coronary Artery Disease, Congestive Heart Failure, Valvular Heart Disease, Arrhythmias, Hypertension, Dyslipidemia, Echocardiography, and Nuclear Cardiology. In his free time, Dr. Gould enjoys running, reading, and spending time with his family.

Dr. Grove

Dr. Matthew Grove, DO, Interventional Cardiologist

Dr. Matthew M. Grove, DO, is a graduate of the Philadelphia College of Osteopathic Medicine, in Philadelphia, PA, where he completed his Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine Medical Degree. He completed his Osteopathic Rotating Internship at Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Grove did his residency in Internal Medicine at Jefferson Medical College, as well as his Cardiovascular Medicine and Interventional Cardiology Fellowships. He is board certified in Interventional Cardiology, Cardiovascular Disease, and Internal Medicine. He is a member of the American College of Cardiology, the Society of Coronary Angiography and Intervention, the American Medical Association, and the American Osteopathic Association.

In his spare time, Dr. Grove enjoys spending time with family and reading.

Dr. Hudson

Dr. Christopher J. Hudson, Cardiac Electrophysiologist

Christopher J. Hudson, MD, is a graduate of the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine, in Greenville, NC, where he earned his Medical Degree. He completed his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the Carolinas Medical Center, in Charlotte, NC. Dr. Hudson completed his Cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology Fellowships at the University of Florida College of Medicine, in Gainesville, FL. He is board certified in Internal Medicine, Cardiology and Cardiac Electrophysiology. He is a member of the Heart Rhythm Society and the American College of Cardiology. Dr. Hudson graduated from the Brody School of Medicine with Phi Beta Kappa honors and was inducted into the Alpha Omega Alpha Medical Honor Society. His clinical areas of interest include Cardiac Devices, Atrial Fibrillation, and Ablation Therapy for Cardiac Arrhythmias.

In his free time, Dr. Hudson enjoys running, golfing, and attending his children’s events.

Dr. Jessup

Dr. David B. Jessup, Interventional Cardiologist

David B. Jessup, MD, is a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of Medicine, in Chapel Hill, NC, where he earned his Medical Degree. He completed his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the University of New Mexico Hospital, in Albuquerque, NM. He completed his Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology Fellowships at the University of Utah Hospitals, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Dr. Jessup is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease, Interventional Cardiology and Endovascular Medicine. He is a registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation. Dr. Jessup is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology and the Society of Cardiac Angiography and Intervention. He was among the 2008 “Top 25 Local Physicians,” from Northwest Business Monthly, in Bellingham, WA. He was also named the 2001-2002 Cardiology Fellow of the Year at the University of Utah. His clinical areas of interest include Clinical Cardiovascular and Vascular Research.

Dr. Kirby

Dr. Alex R. Kirby, Interventional Cardiologist

Alex R. Kirby, MD, is a graduate of East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine, in Greenville, NC, where he earned his Medical Degree. Dr. Kirby completed his Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease Internships and Residencies at the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, in Phoenix, AZ. He completed his Cardiology and Interventional Cardiology Fellowships at the Good Samaritan Regional Medical Center, where he was the Chief Cardiology and Chief Interventional Cardiology Fellow. Dr. Kirby is board certified in Interventional Cardiology, Cardiology, and Internal Medicine. He is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Physicians, and the Society of Coronary Angiography and Intervention, as well as a member of the North Carolina Medical Society. Dr. Kirby is a recipient of Honors in Medical Ethics and the recipient of the Outstanding Internal Medical Student Award. His clinical areas of interest include General Cardiology, Interventional Cardiology with simple to complex interventions via femoral or radial approach, and Pacemaker implantation and follow-up.

In his free time, Dr. Kirby enjoys restoring older Corvettes and running.

Dr. Levine

Dr. Matthew Levine, Cardiologist

Dr. Matthew A. Levine is a graduate of the University of Florida College of Medicine, in Gainesville, FL, where he completed his Medical Degree. He completed his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the University of Florida Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL. Dr. Levine finished his Fellowship at Brown University in Providence, RI. He is Board Certified in Cardiovascular Disease, Internal Medicine, and Nuclear Cardiology. He is a Registered Physician in Vascular Interpretation. He is a member of the American College of Cardiology and the American Heart Association. Dr. Levine has won the Physician Beacon of Service, CarolinaEast Health System.

 Dr. Mehurg

Dr. Shannon M. Mehurg, Cardiologist

Shannon M. Mehurg, MD, is a graduate of the East Carolina University Brody School of Medicine, in Greenville, NC, where he earned his Medical Degree. He completed his Internal Medicine Internship and Residency, as well as his Cardiology Research Fellowship, at the Medical University of South Carolina, College of Medicine, in Charleston, SC. Additionally, Dr. Mehurg completed his Cardiology Fellowship at the University of Massachusetts School of Medicine, in Worcester, MA. He is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease, Internal Medicine, Nuclear Cardiology and Echocardiography. His clinical areas of interest include Coronary Artery Disease, Valvular Heart Disease, Arrhythmias, and Congestive Heart Failure.

In his free time, Dr. Mehurg enjoys running, skiing, and spending time with his family.

Dr. Park

Dr. Angela Mi Woo Park, Clinical Cardiac Electrophysiologist

Angela M. Park, MD, is a graduate of the Case Western Reserve University School of Medicine, in Cleveland, OH, where she earned her Medical Degree. She completed her Internal Medicine Internship and Residency at the Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, in Los Angeles, CA, where she was the Chief Resident in Internal Medicine. Dr. Park also completed her Cardiology Fellowship at the Cedars Sinai Medical Center. She is board certified in Cardiovascular Disease and Cardiac Electrophysiology and is a member of the Heart Rhythm Society. Dr. Park’s clinical interests include Arrhythmias, Atrial Fibrillation, Cardiac Devices, and Ablation Therapy.

In her free time, Dr. Park enjoys spending time with her husband and children.

Dr. Rodriguez

Dr. Antonio Rodriguez, Cardiologist

Antonio Rodriguez, MD, is a graduate of the Puerto Rico School of Medicine, Rîo Perde, Puerto Rico,. He completed his internship at Caguas Regional Hospital, Caguas, Puerto Rico, in OB/GYN. He completed his Internal Medicine Residency at the Naval Medical Center in Portsmouth, VA. He had completed his fellowship at the National Naval Medical Center - Walter Reed Army Medical Center, Washington D.C., in Invasive and Nuclear Cardiology. He is certified in cardiology and internal medicine, and has special training in nuclear cardiology and cardiac CT. He is a member of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Physicians, and the North American Medical Society.

In his free time, Dr. Rodriguez enjoys travel, camping, and target shooting.

Dr. Williams

Dr. John A. Williams, III, Interventional Cardiologist

John A. Williams, III, MD, is a graduate of the Georgetown University School of Medicine, in Washington, DC, where he earned his Medical Degree. He completed his Internship at the Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, in New York, NY. He completed his Residency in Internal Medicine at the North Shore University Hospital, in Manhasset, NY. Dr. Williams was the Chief Resident in Internal Medicine at the North Shore University Hospital. He completed his Fellowship in Interventional Cardiology and Cardiovascular Disease at the Yale University School of Medicine, in Manhasset, NY. He is board certified in Internal Medicine and Cardiovascular Disease. Dr. Williams is a founding partner of he Heart Center of Eastern Carolina and is an Assistant Professor of Medicine with the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences. Additionally, Dr. Williams was the Director of the Interventional Cardiology Program, at the Craven Regional Medical Center (now CarolinaEast Medical Center), in New Bern, NC, from 1994-2010, and he was the Medical Director of the Coronary Care Unit and Cardiac Rehabilitation Programs at the Naval Medical Center in Bethesda, MD in 1994. Dr. Williams is a Fellow of the American College of Cardiology, the American College of Physicians, the American Heart Association and the Society for Angiography and Interventions. His clinical areas of interest include Complex Coronary Artery Disease and Intervention, Peripheral Arterial Disease and Intervention, Valvular Heart Disease (diagnosis and treatment), and Nuclear Cardiology and Imaging.

In his free time, Dr. Williams enjoys cycling, motorcycles and woodworking.

Melissa Denman

Melissa A. Denman, RN, MSN, ANCP-BC

Melissa A. Denman, RN, MSN, ANCP-BC, is a graduate of Drexel University, in Philadelphia, PA, where she earned her Masters in Nursing. She completed her Bachelors of Science in Nursing at Quinnipiac University in Hamden, CT. She is Board Certified in Acute Care Nurse Practitioning and Cardiac Device Management. Ms. Denman's clinical interests lie in nutrition, preventative cardiology, Pacemaker/ ICD management, and hypertension.

In her free time, Ms. Denman enjoys long distance running, hiking, and playing piano.

Terri Koson

Terri L. Koson, ACNP-C

Terri L. Koson, ACNP-C, is a graduate of East Carolina University's School of Nursing, in Greenville, NC, with a Master's Degree as a clinical nurse specialist with a concentration in pulmonology. She completed her Bachelors Degree in Nursing at East Carolina University's School of Nursing, in Greenville, NC. She has certificates for Acute Care Nurse Practitioning and Adult Primary Care Nurse Practitioning from Duke University's School of Nursing. Her clinical interests are cardiac rehabilitation, prevention, wellness, and heart failure.

In her free time, Ms. Koson enjoys volunteering at MERCI clinic for the uninsured and underinsured adults in New Bern, NC. She also enjoys kayaking, sailing, running.

Regina Newton

Regina M. Newton, AGNP-C

Regina M. Newton, AGNP-C, is a graduate of East Carolina University, in Greenville, NC, with a Masters in the Nurse Practitioner Program. She completed her Bachelors in Nursing from East Carolina University, in Greenville, NC. She has Certificates and special training American Association of Nurse Practitioners Certified and the North Carolina Nurses Association. She is a member of the Sigma Theta Tau International Honor Society of Nursing and has won the Gertrude E. Skelly Nursing Scholarship. Her clinical interests lie in cardiology.

In her free time, Ms. Newton enjoys stand up paddle boarding, running, cycling, fishing, and painting.

Mallory Salter, RN, MSN, FNP-C

Mallory Gail Salter, RN, MSN, PNP-C, is a graduate of Duke University, in Durham, NC, where she earned her Masters in Nursing as a Family Nurse Practitioner. She completed her Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing at East Carolina University, in Greenville, NC. She is AANP certified by the American Association of Nurse Practitioners, certified as a Critical Care Registered Nurse, and a recipient of the Clinical Excellence Award, 2013.

In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family, reading American and British literature, playing the guitar, and going to the beach.

Dusty Scott

Dusty L. Scott, PA-C

Dusty L. Scott, PA-C, is a graduate of Wake Forest University School of Medicine – School of Physical Assistants, in Chapel Hill, NC. She is certified by the National Commission on Certification of Physicians Assistants and is a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants. She has an Academic Distinction from the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, in Chapel Hill, NC.

In her free time, Ms. Scott enjoys spending time with her family.

Matthew Shaeffer

Matthew Shaeffer, EMT-P, RN, MSN, ANP-C

Matthew J. Shaeffer, EMT-P, RN, MSN, ANP-C, is a graduate of the Adult Primary Care Nurse Practitioner program at Duke University, in Durham, NC, where he completed his Masters of Science in Nursing with a concentration in Cardiology. He received his Bachelors of Science degree in Nursing from the University of North Carolina-Charlotte, in Charlotte, NC. He is licenced and certified as a paramedic and a registered nurse.

In his free time, he enjoys coaching, running, fishing, and riding his motorcycle.

Susan Zowadniak

Susan Zowadniak, FNP

Susan Kay Zowadniak, FNP, is a graduate of the Family Nurse Practitioner program at the University of Illinois College of Medicine, in Champaigne, IL, where she earned her Master of Science in Nursing. She completed her Bachelors of Science in Nursing at the Southern Illinois University, in Chicago, IL. She is certified by the American Nurses Credentialing Center.
